Just like that, we’ve made our way to November and I seriously have no idea where the time has gone. I will be honest and say Thanksgiving is not my favorite holiday … honestly, I don’t care for it at all and it will always be a time when I lost my grandmother, but I still can’t help but to reflect on things. This year I’m thankful for:
The confidence I gained to follow my passion.
I’ve always wanted to be a writer, I even wanted to major in English in college, but my college counselor advised me the only career path I could have with that particular major was that of an English teacher … thanks for that because that year of being undecided was SO beneficial (insert major eye roll emoji).
The discovery of self love.
I’ve always thought highly of myself, but like many women tend to do, I’ve looked at myself and made “those” comments. You know the ones … “I look fat in this” or “My arms are too flabby” … those self deprecating comments that do nothing for our self esteem, nothing to fix the issue we have a problem with, but everything to damage the minds of our daughters, causing them to too look in the mirror and judge themselves.
In exchange for that, I’ve learned to love all of myself, while working on the things I feel can be improved. Which leads to the last one …
The implementation of self care.
This one is still quite new, but now that I’ve started, I wonder what took me so long.
Self care may sound selfish to some, but it is actually quite the opposite. Think of it in terms of a car … you regularly give it gas and routine maintenance in order to keep it running at optimal conditions, which is also necessary for yourself. Finding those things that will keep you running at optimal conditions, so you can continue to get up in the morning and conquer the world, or just your moody teenagers, without leaving them stranded at the store the moment they catch an attitude or look at you sideways for, seemingly, no reason.
I’ve carved out time for myself doing a bit of monthly maintenance of sorts that, in turn, assist me in better taking care of my family; it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done.
What are some things you’re thankful for this year?
