If you’ve been here a while, or at least during 2019, you know I’ve had my trials and tribulations with vehicles. I’d gotten so fed up, I even gave up driving for a while to try out public transportation before jumping back into driving with my current Toyota Prius.

I love the cost and environmental savings that come along with driving a hybrid vehicle, so when I got the opportunity to test drive Toyota’s first-ever Corolla Hybrid in the US during the A Girl’s Guide to Cars Conference in Atlanta, I jumped at the chance.

I’ve grown accustomed to the smart key and push-button start feature with Toyota, which this vehicle has, but I love the ability to still use the knee level gear shift. Some models have done away with this feature, giving you a button to push for things like parking, so being able to actually shift into that mode was a simple, yet welcome, surprise.

I love exploring off the beaten path, so instead of checking out the sights of Atlanta, I went in search of what Marietta had to offer. With the exception of the occasional, highway necessitating, road trip, I do most of my driving around town or on backroads, so this gave me the opportunity to see the pre-collision system with pedestrian detection at work.

With the pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, the vehicle utilizes cameras to detect when you’re approaching a pedestrian in the road. The vehicle then lets off a series of beeps and provides a visual before activating it’s brake assistance to stop the car before an accident takes place. This certainly came in hand driving around the super cute neighborhood that housed the walk-up coffee house, Sessions Stand.

There’s an 8-inch touch screen that allows you to control the radio, provides a backup camera, and Apple Carplay, among many other features, but I’m so used to utilizing my phone for navigational purposes, I didn’t fully take advantage of this feature, so halfway through my journey, I realized I only had 20% battery life and no car charger – fail. What I lack in car charger, I make up for in cube and USB cord and the 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid LE just so happens to come with a USB charge port.

I was strictly on a sightseeing adventure but had I found the need for space after visiting every farmer’s market I saw, the trunk provided ample room for groceries, packages, and luggage.

At just $23,100, the 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid LE is the lowest-priced hybrid Toyota out there. Combine that with the 53 MPG you’ll get driving around town and you’ll save enough in time and money to take your chances at getting one of the illustrious chicken sandwiches everyone has been raving about.
